로마 팔라티노Palatine 언덕에 위치하며 공화정 시대에 지은 가장 중요한 고급 주택 중 하나인 카사 데이 그리피Casa dei  Grifi (그리핀의 집)가 발견 이후 처음으로 일반에 공개된다.

이번 공개 투어는 실시간 영상 스트리밍으로 진행한다.

방문객들은 아트리움atrium에 머무르는 동안, 비디오 카메라를 장착한 가이드가 아래층 방들로 내려가 내부를 안내한다.

실시간 영상과 음성은 최첨단 미세 천공 메쉬 벽에 투사된다. 

이 주택은 1912년 로마 포럼Roman Forum[포로 로마노] 발굴 책임자 고고학자 자코모 보니Giacomo Boni가 발견했다.

주택 이름은 붉은색 바탕에 서로 마주 보는 두 마리 흰색 석고 그리핀 장식에서 유래했다.

벽면 프레스코화는 후기 공화정 시대 장식의 가장 정교한 사례로 꼽히며, 기둥과 회랑, 대리석 상감 세공 등의 건축적 착시 효과를 표현한다.

모자이크 바닥은 흑백 테세라tesserae로 이루어진 바탕과 대리석 테세라로 만든 다채로운 색상의 입체 패널로 구성된다. 

기원전 2세기 후반에서 1세기 중반 사이에 지은 이 저택(도무스domus)은 팔라티노 언덕에서 가장 오래된 공화정 시대 건축물 중 하나다.

아우구스투스 시대에 새로운 건축물이 들어서면서 위층은 파괴되었고, 현재는 1층만 남았고, 아트리움과 그 아래 지하층 흔적만 볼 수 있다.

화려한 색채의 프레스코화로 장식한 벽과 모자이크 바닥은 도미티아누스 황제가 건설한 플라비오 궁전Palazzo Flavio의 거대한 기초 공사 때문에 원래 구조물이 파괴되고 해체되었음에도 놀라울 정도로 온전하게 보존되었다.

이는 당시 건축가들이 남은 공간을 흙으로 메워 궁전 지지대로 사용했기 때문이다.

이 저택은 보존이 매우 까다로워 개방이 어렵지만, 그만큼 매력적인 곳이다.

2024년 12월에 완료된 이 종합적인 복원 및 과학적 안정화 프로젝트에는 벽면에 석회 기반 모르타르 주입, 페인트 표면 보수, 목조 구조물 보강, 프레스코화와 인물 조각 장식에서 침전물 제거를 위한 레이저 세척, 그리고 3D 사진측량 조사가 포함되었다. (출처: dailysabah.com)

The Casadei Grifi, one of the most important luxury residences on the Palatine in Rome to have survived from the Republican period, is opening to the public for the first time since its discovery, with a live-streamed video tour. Visitors will remain in the atrium while a guide equipped with a video camera descends into the rooms below. The live video and audio will be projected onto a state-of-the-art micro-perforated mesh wall.  

It was discovered in 1912 by archaeologist Giacomo Boni, director of the excavations of the Roman Forum. The house takes its name from a distinctive decorative element: two white stucco griffins facing each other against a rich red background. The wall frescoes are among the most elaborate surviving examples of late Republican decoration, featuring architectural illusions of colonnades, pillars, and marble inlays. The #mosaic floors consist of fields of black-and-white tesserae with multicolored panels of three-dimensional shapes made from marble tesserae. 

Built between the late 2nd century and the mid-1st century BCE, the domus is one of the oldest Republican-era structures on the Palatine. The upper floors were destroyed by new construction in the Augustan period, and today only the ground floor survives, with the remains of the atrium and an underlying hypogeal level. Its walls, frescoed with vivid polychrome colors, and its mosaic floors are still remarkably intact, even after the massive foundations of the Palazzo Flavio, built by Domitian, cut through and disarticulated the original structure. This is because the builders simply filled the remaining spaces with earth to serve as support for the palace. 

The domus has fragile and complex conservation requirements that make it as difficult to open to visitors as it is fascinating to visit. A comprehensive project of restoration and scientific stabilization was completed in December 2024 and included lime-based mortar injections into the walls, repair of painted surfaces, reinforcement of wooden structures, laser cleaning to remove deposits from the frescoes and figurative stuccoes, and 3D photogrammetric surveys.
